Theater Performances Enrich Learning for Cortez Elementary Students

  • Local Champion: Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1
  • Date Funded: July 23, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $2,400

Since the coronavirus pandemic, Montezuma-Cortez School District has cut funding for extracurricular activities, limiting assemblies and field trips for Cortez’s elementary students. Without those opportunities, Cortez’s young students have missed out on important learning and exposure to new interests, a problem two of the district’s elementary school principals wanted to solve. After hearing about the Creede Repertory Theater, a group that brings local theater to communities in southern Colorado, the principals reached out to LOR with the idea to host performances at Cortez’s elementary schools. LOR’s funding will help Montezuma-Cortez School District cover the costs for Creede Repertory Theater to perform at Kemper, Mesa, and Lewis-Arriola elementaries, introducing students to theater before they enter middle and high school.
