There's treasure in more than just the mountains near Libby.

Between the Kootenai River, Cabinet Mountains, and thousands of acres of public lands nearby, it’s easy to see Libby is rich in natural resources. But the real gems aren’t in the mountains: They’re in the houses and businesses along Mineral Avenue, California Avenue, Granite Creek Road, and Larch Street. The people are the real treasure here. Whether it’s stepping in to resurrect a beloved arts program at the high school, or clear downed trees in the wake of a devastating winter storm, Libby locals turn out for and with each other. Little wonder then that residents have led nearly 350 projects with support from LOR since 2022, including several creative efforts designed to address youth mental health and the needs of Libby’s most vulnerable residents. This dynamic community regularly punches above its perceived weight: It’s currently leading the way in rural Montana when it comes to creating strong local workforce pipelines. For example, after one Libby local launched a hospitality workforce training program, it proved so successful that the Montana Department of Labor & Industry expanded it to seven other rural communities across the state. Community officer Tabitha Viergutz, who has lived in Libby for 16 years, is committed to keeping the momentum going through 2028, when LOR will leave Libby after six years of work.
