GED Program Expands Educational Opportunities in Questa

  • Local Champion: UNM - Taos
  • Date Funded: October 15, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $18,500

Questa residents who want to earn a high school equivalency diploma or take college courses must travel to Taos or beyond, making it difficult for those juggling transportation challenges, work commitments, and family responsibilities to pursue their educational goals. After a series of conversations with community members about local education needs, a GED coordinator and the Questa librarian developed a solution: bring GED classes, literacy tutoring, and student advising directly to the Questa library using UNM-Taos instructors and resources. LOR’s funding helped the Taos Education and Career Center @ UNM Taos purchase 12 laptops, 12 sets of headphones, and a copier/printing stipend for students and instructors. Beginning in October 2026, the program offered GED classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, volunteer literacy tutoring, and educational pathway advising at the library, with a goal of enrolling and retaining at least 10 students. The program gives Questa residents a local pathway to earning a GED, pursuing certificates and associate degrees, and exploring transfer opportunities.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Localogy.
