Pathways to Recovery: Local Poet Helps Taoseños Battle Addiction

  • Local Champion: Rio Grande Alcohol Treatment Center Inc.
  • Date Funded: August 26, 2022
  • Grant Amount: $2,500

In Taos, there are limited local resources to help individuals struggling with substance abuse with their recoveries. But one organization, the Rio Grande Alcohol Treatment Center, is trying to create new pathways to recovery and is hosting a Path to Wellness event in September to celebrate locals battling addiction. Ahead of that event, organizers reached out to the LOR Foundation about hiring a substance abuse subject matter expert to conduct a journaling workshop and speak at the event. With a grant from LOR, the Rio Grande Alcohol Treatment Center was able to hire Jimmy Santiago Baca, an award-winning northern New Mexican poet who will lead individuals in recovery through a journaling exercise before speaking to the group at Kit Carson Park.

Impact

Roughly 250 peopled attended this event, where Taos County, the Town of Taos, and the Taos Pueblo jointly signed a historic proclamation to support recovery from substance abuse disorder. It was the first time all three entities have jointly signed a proclamation.
