A Free Training Equips Buffalo Residents With Suicide Intervention Skills

  • Local Champion: Johnson County School District No. 1
  • Date Funded: October 15, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $6,300

Johnson County ranks fourth in Wyoming for suicide rate, and Wyoming itself consistently ranks among the states with the highest per-capita suicide rates in the U.S. Many Buffalo residents don’t have the training to identify when a community member may be experiencing thoughts of suicide and respond with confidence and care. A school counselor at Clear Creek Middle School reached out to LOR with a solution: offer a free, two-day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). LOR’s funding will help Clear Creek Middle School cover trainer fees, learning materials, and meals for participants. The training will equip Buffalo residents with practical skills to engage in open, direct conversations about suicide and intervene safely, empowering Buffalo residents with the knowledge and confidence to support one another.
