Cortez Keeps Its Tiniest Residents Safe with a Discounted Car Seat Program

  • Local Champion: Montezuma County Health Department
  • Date Funded: October 14, 2022
  • Grant Amount: $20,000

For many years, the Colorado Department of Transportation gave funding to Montezuma County to provide families in need with carseats and installation instructions for a nominal fee (or sometimes free). This past year, CDOT paused the program, leaving a gap for families who can’t afford new car seats for their children, so a member of the Montezuma County Health Department approached LOR. LOR’s funding will be used to purchase about 130 car seats for families this year while the county finds a sustaining source of funding for subsequent years. Families typically pay about $50 for the carseats, which are installed by professionals who also train family members on how to properly secure infants. Recently, the recipient of one of the car seats was in a car accident about a week after having the seat installed; tragically the driver died, but the infant in the car seat survived, unhurt.
