Cooking Classes Help Cortez Families Eat Healthy and Stretch Benefits

  • Local Champion: Good Food Collective
  • Date Funded: October 22, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $12,800

Many Cortez residents who utilize public assistance programs like WIC and SNAP struggle to stretch their dollars and create healthy meals for their families. After hearing this challenge repeatedly from organizations working with food-insecure families, one county extension specialist came up with a solution and connected with the Good Food Collective. LOR’s funding helped the extension specialist and the Good Food Collective launch a series of cooking classes—including sessions offered in Spanish and culturally relevant cooking classes through the Ute Mountain Ute WIC program—to teach nutritious meal preparation on a budget. In addition to gaining new skills, participants will leave with kitchen supplies to take home, allowing them to put their learning into practice and improve their families’ health.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Onward! A Legacy Foundation.
