Community Archive Preserves Questa’s Stories and Cultural Knowledge

In Questa, the stories, histories, and cultural knowledge held by longtime residents are at risk of being lost as elders age and historical materials deteriorate—leaving future generations without access to the voices and experiences that have shaped these communities. To help preserve this invaluable generational knowledge, a team member at Voices of the Northern Rio Grande brought forward an idea: redesign the organization’s website to create a central, accessible home for community archives, where elders, young people, and residents of all backgrounds can contribute stories and explore the region’s shared history. LOR funding helped Voices of the Northern Rio Grande hire contractors to redesign the site, update project branding, organize and prepare approximately 400 existing archive files, and publish stories, photos, audio, and video on QuestaStories.org, YouTube, and podcast platforms. Together, these efforts will preserve and expand access to the stories, experiences, and cultural knowledge of North Central New Mexico, ensuring they remain available to inform and inspire current and future generations.
