Civic Projects Connect Southwest Open School Students to the Cortez Community

  • Local Champion: Southwest Open School
  • Date Funded: January 23, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $2,680

High school government students at Southwest Open School learn about how small projects and ideas can make a big difference in the Cortez community. The problem is they lack the supplies and resources to design and implement their own meaningful community improvement projects. One humanities teacher saw an opportunity to deepen her students’ understanding of civic engagement, so she reached out to LOR with her idea. LOR’s funding will help Southwest Open School purchase supplies for 24 student-led projects, covering art supplies, books, grocery bags, office supplies, and transportation for community visits. From reading to elementary students at Kwiyagat Community Academy to organizing food drives and community cleanups, students will develop practical civic skills while creating real improvements in Cortez.
