A Pill Counter Protects Cortez Patients

  • Local Champion: Southwest Health System
  • Date Funded: November 19, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $9,000

Manually counting opioid medication increases the risk of prescription errors, which can push vulnerable patients toward addiction or lead to inadequate pain management. Pharmacy staff at Cortez’s Southwest Health System wanted to improve patient safety, so they connected with LOR for support. LOR’s funding will help Southwest Health System purchase an automated opioid pill counter that maintains digital records of every pill dispensed. The new equipment will ensure Cortez residents receive exactly the right amount of medication, protecting patients and pharmacy staff while unlocking additional opioid settlement funding.
