A Nonprofit Addresses Cortez’s Protein Gap

  • Local Champion: A Cortez local
  • Date Funded: September 12, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $5,000

Food pantries and soup kitchens in Cortez struggle to provide protein to families facing food insecurity due to rising costs and limited budgets. Seeing an opportunity to address this pressing issue and support the local economy, one local resident came up with a solution: connect area ranchers and farmers with food assistance organizations. LOR’s funding helped hire legal and accounting professionals to establish a new 501(c)3 nonprofit focused on addressing protein shortages in Cortez’s local food system. The organization will work with Cortez-area livestock producers to develop innovative approaches to providing protein to local food pantries.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Onward! A Legacy Foundation.
