A Cortez Construction Class Builds Skills by Building a Workshop

  • Local Champion: Fundamental Needs Inc
  • Date Funded: March 5, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $10,000

Cortez residents have few opportunities for accredited, hands-on construction training. One of the few places where students can get training is Pueblo Community College, but the school sits roughly 10 miles outside of town. When the founder of Fundamental Needs learned that transportation to campus was a barrier for students, he reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help Fundamental Needs purchase construction tools, materials, and safety equipment to launch an intro to construction course with Pueblo Community College at the Cortez Makerspace downtown. Students will spend the semester building five heavy-duty workbenches and two mobile lumber storage carts, gaining foundational skills while creating permanent infrastructure for future construction classes at the Makerspace.
