Sleeping Bags Support Participation of Monte Vista Students in Educational Excursions

  • Local Champion: Monte Vista School District NO. C-8
  • Date Funded: December 3, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $9,511

Every year, the fourth-graders at Bill Metz Elementary School in Monte Vista have the opportunity to travel to Denver and spend a memorable and educational night at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. However, to participate in the past, students have been required to bring a sleeping bag, which many families cannot afford. Wanting to ensure that financial barriers never prevent a student from participating in this field trip or any other educational excursions, a Bill Metz teacher reached out to LOR for help.

LOR’s funding will allow the school to purchase sleeping bags and plastic totes for up to fifty students, which can be reused by the fourth-grade classes for field trips each year. It will also cover the cost of Polaroid cameras for each child who attends the night at the museum, eliminating students’ temptation to document the field trip on their phones (phone use during the excursion is against both the museum and the school’s policies) while still providing them with a way to capture their memories for both personal and academic purposes.
