Movie Tickets and Meals Encourage Taos Student Literacy

  • Local Champion: A Taos local
  • Date Funded: March 4, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $2,000

Reading has been a significant challenge for Taos High School students, a problem highlighted by drops in testing and more than 70 students reading below grade level. The school created a successful reading intervention program to remedy the issue, but one long-time educator wanted to strengthen student participation and encourage improvement. Her simple but effective idea? Incentives. LOR’s funding helped the teacher and Taos High School purchase local gift cards, movie tickets, and celebratory meals, giving students tangible recognition for their improvement and helping them engage more deeply with reading and writing.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Downtown Taos.
