Libby Builds a Basketball Court for Budding NBA All-Stars

  • Local Champion: Libby K-12 Schools
  • Date Funded: August 1, 2022
  • Grant Amount: $10,000

Playing basketball outside is a quintessential childhood activity. Problem is, in Libby, the only public outdoor basketball hoop is more than a mile from where many young children on the south side of town live. There are some private hoops that are closer, but those hoops have been placed in the street, creating a dangerous situation. Recognizing this problem, the school district approached LOR with a potential solution: install a new basketball hoop and court at Central Park, which sits adjacent to the school district offices in a central part of Libby. The park has long been in need of revitalization—including the basketball hoops, which are sagging and dangerous. LOR’s funding will be used to help replace the old hoop, put down wood chips behind it as cushion, and lay asphalt around the picnic tables to make them accessible to people with disabilities.

Impact

The park has seen more visitors and has become a noted location for families to convene and spend time with their kids. According to families living near the park, the basketball area is very popular with young kids in Libby.
