Lander Teen Launches a Competitive Math Club for Her Peers

  • Local Champion: Lander local
  • Date Funded: January 9, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $3,166

When funding and staffing issues left Lander students without a MathCounts team—a competitive middle school math club and program—one local teen took matters into her own hands. The Lander high school student believes so strongly in the positive effects of math and MathCounts that she rebuilt the club from the ground up, hosting practice with 15 students in her own living room. Trouble is, the group doesn’t have the supplies they need to be successful: no calculators, no dry erase markers and board, and not even enough chairs for everyone. They also have no funding to support their travel to competitions—nor their goal to host a state competition in Lander, bringing students from all over the region. LOR’s support will help with the purchase of the equipment they need to practice and the costs associated with competition travel, allowing this motivated group to relaunch an essential Lander program.

This project is fiscally sponsored by the Lander Community Foundation
