Interactive Driving Tour Connects Lander Residents to Local History

  • Local Champion: Fremont County Pioneer Museum
  • Date Funded: August 19, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $7,476

In Lander, many residents lack information about historically significant places in their area, missing opportunities to connect with local landmarks and stories. When Wyoming announced funding for counties to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the director of the Wind River Visitors Council saw a chance to address this knowledge gap while honoring national themes of liberty, equality, memory, and belonging. She reached out to LOR with a plan to supplement state funding for an interactive driving tour that would make local history accessible and engaging. The tour, called the Wind River Country Heritage Quest, is a county-wide, app-based scavenger hunt featuring 15 landmarks with three-minute audio stories exploring each site’s history from pre-history to present. Participants can earn prizes by visiting multiple locations and checking in through the app, creating an incentive to explore while learning about migration, innovation, and resilience in their community. LOR’s funding will help with the costs of including Lander on the tour. This permanent resource will continue educating residents and visitors long after the 2026 celebration ends.
