Free Fly-Fishing Classes Help Teach Weiser Locals, Well, How to Fish

  • Local Champion: Indianhead Fly Fishers
  • Date Funded: November 15, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $8,500

Weiser, Idaho, sits at the beautiful confluence of the Snake and Weiser rivers, home to rainbows, brown trout, and other (fickle) fish. The City of Weiser even built a small local fishing pond—maintained by the Indianhead Fly Fisher group—so community members could fish, walk, and picnic in the beautiful nature area along the river. Despite these natural resources, fly fishing remains elusive to many. To learn, Weiser residents have to leave the area and pay for lessons. The Indianhead Fly Fishers wanted to change that. So they came up with a solution: Offer free fly-fishing classes to Weiser residents of all ages—with the materials and equipment to teach them—throughout the year. They just needed a little help to set the hook on their idea, so they reached out to LOR. LOR’s funding will be used to purchase the equipment—rods, line, and fly-tying tools—needed for classes.
