Community-Led Special Olympics Program Keeps Inclusive Sports Alive in Lander

  • Local Champion: A Lander local
  • Date Funded: September 29, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $10,000

In Lander, youth with and without disabilities have competed together on a Unified Special Olympics team, but new state guidelines prohibit school districts from funding teams that include students without IEPs. This policy change threatened to end the inclusive program that has grown from 12 to 20 athletes in recent years. After learning the school district could no longer facilitate the team, one community volunteer and a group of parents had an idea to launch an independent Special Olympics program that would preserve the Unified team model. With strong community support—including $6,000 raised in just two weeks—this parent-led initiative will operate outside the school system while maintaining the inclusive spirit that makes the program special. This community-driven approach ensures youth of varying abilities ages eight and up can continue competing while building confidence, skills, and lasting friendships. LOR’s funding helped purchase team jerseys, hoodies, adaptive equipment like bowling ramps for wheelchair users, and resources for team-building dinners and professional photos that give these athletes the same recognition as other Lander sports teams.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Lander Community Foundation.
