Book Distribution at Wellness Visits Supports Early Literacy in Taos

  • Local Champion: Taos Whole Community Health
  • Date Funded: April 17, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $800

Young children in Taos County often lack consistent access to age-appropriate books at home, contributing to early literacy gaps that can affect school readiness and long-term educational outcomes. Without regular exposure to reading materials during the critical developmental years from infancy through age five, many families miss opportunities to build early language skills and foster positive reading habits. To help address this gap, a physician at Taos Whole Health developed a simple but impactful solution: provide free books to young patients during annual wellness visits, integrating literacy promotion directly into pediatric care. With support from LOR, Taos Whole Health will purchase approximately 300–400 children’s books annually through a discounted program. The books will be distributed to children ages 6 months to 5 years during routine wellness visits, reaching an estimated 300–350 young patients each year. This low-cost, high-impact approach leverages an existing healthcare setting to provide reliable access to early reading materials without requiring additional staffing or infrastructure. By linking books to routine pediatric care during a critical stage of cognitive and language development, the project will help strengthen early literacy and support school readiness for young children across Taos County.
