A Water Trail Map Makes Kootenai River Recreation Safer

Libby locals and a growing number of visitors flock to the Kootenai River each year for outdoor recreation like rafting and fishing. But without detailed navigation guides, the river’s strong currents and rapids pose serious safety risks. After a tragic drowning near Kootenai Falls highlighted the limitations of the river’s current hand-drawn maps, staff with Lincoln County came up with an idea. LOR’s funding will help Lincoln County hire contractors to create a comprehensive water trail map that identifies hazards, emergency exits, and safe recreation zones on the Kootenai River between Libby and Troy. The new guide, which will be available digitally and in print, will ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy the river, stimulating the local economy and protecting the local environment.
