A Trap and Release Program Aims to Reduce Cortez’s Feral Cat Population

  • Local Champion: Rachel's Forgotten Felines Rescue
  • Date Funded: February 7, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $6,960

Cortez has more than 50 feral cat colonies and its feral cat population is only growing. While the cats themselves suffer from harsh conditions and endless breeding cycles, they also create health concerns for both residents and their pets. One Cortez local wanted to address the critical gap in local feral cat services, so she established a new nonprofit and reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help Rachel’s Forgotten Felines Rescue start a trap-neuter-release program, covering medical expenses as well as traps, vaccinations, and other equipment. While the initiative aims to decrease Cortez’s feral cat population through spay and neuter, Rachel’s Forgotten Felines will also collaborate with local groups to open new doors for adoption.
