Wind Phone Establishes Sacred Space for Grief and Healing in Taos

  • Local Champion: A Taos Local
  • Date Funded: August 7, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $7,476

Grief in Taos County often remains unspoken due to the limited access to support in rural places, leaving many to face loss alone without a dedicated space for healing. Red Willow Hospice staff recognized the need for a non-clinical sanctuary where people could process grief and connect with lost loved ones.

Inspired by a Japanese tradition, they envisioned a “Wind Phone”—a symbolic space featuring a vintage rotary phone, adobe construction, stone seating, and native landscaping in a serene public setting. With funding from LOR, Red Willow Hospice will purchase materials to build and install this grief wind phone.

This installation offers a free, year-round refuge where community members can privately reflect and speak to those who have passed—helping to reduce stigma around loss and encourage healthy grieving within the community.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Taos Whole Community Health.
