Short-Term Housing Makes Health Care Accessible for Monte Vista Patients and Families

  • Local Champion: Valley Citizens' Foundation for Health Care, Inc.
  • Date Funded: June 5, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $29,375

Rio Grande Hospital (officially Valley Citizens Foundation for Health Care, Inc.) is the only hospital in Rio Grande County, providing critical access and trauma care for Monte Vista residents. Though the hospital is a relatively short 14-mile drive from Monte Vista, transportation and housing can be prohibitively expensive for patients receiving treatment and family members who want to be near their loved ones. To make it easier, Rio Grande Hospital built six tiny cottages to provide short-term housing for patients and hospital visitors. The construction of the cottages was covered, but the hospital needed help furnishing them so one local reached out to LOR for support. LOR’s funding will help the hospital procure all of the furniture and fixtures for the cottages, helping Monte Vista residents and their families access free housing while receiving care at Rio Grande Hospital.
