Service Dog Supports Healing for Taos Community Members

  • Local Champion: Community against Violence (CAV)
  • Date Funded: August 18, 2025
  • Grant Amount: $6,496

Children and adults supported by the Child Advocacy Center and Community Against Violence often face intense stress during forensic interviews, court proceedings, and assessments—which can limit their ability to express themselves or stay fully present in the process. When an advocate saw how much comfort a client’s own dog provided during a particularly difficult interview, the team recognized an opportunity to strengthen their support services. They reached out to LOR with a simple but powerful idea: train a facility service dog to offer a calming, reassuring presence for victims navigating these experiences.

With LOR’s funding, Community Against Violence and the Children’s Advocacy Center will partner with Assistance Dogs of the Southwest to train Loki, a facility service dog who will provide comfort and reduce anxiety during interviews, court appearances, and assessments. Loki’s presence will help create a more welcoming, supportive environment for those seeking justice and healing—and offer meaningful support to staff in their vital work.
