Pilot Project in Lander Provides Lifesaving Cancer Screening Kits

  • Local Champion: Wyoming Cancer Resource Services
  • Date Funded: February 22, 2021
  • Grant Amount: $9,035

Early screening for colorectal cancer improves outcomes tremendously, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of Lander residents getting these lifesaving early screenings dropped precipitously, as many people postponed or canceled routine healthcare procedures. A staff member at Wyoming Cancer Resource Services, understood that the solution to increasing screening rates was twofold: raise awareness about the importance of colorectal cancer screening while also making it easier for people to get screened. She spearheaded a weeklong cancer awareness event at Palace Pharmacy in Lander and worked with St. John’s Health and Lander Labs to provide at-home screening kits, making it easier for locals to stay on top of their health without needing to visit a doctor’s office. LOR provided funding for the cancer screening kits and covered the cost of processing the tests at the lab.
