Hands-on Agricultural Education Prepares Next Generation of Questa Farmers for Success

Taos County farmers and ranchers are among the oldest in the nation, with an average age of over 65. As they begin to retire, very few young people are prepared to take their place due to a lack of knowledge and limited access to land and equipment. In Questa, which is already designated as a food desert, this lack of agricultural knowledge could further limit the amount of fresh, locally-grown food available to residents in coming years. So, a local farmer and Localogy staff member approached LOR with an idea: establish apprenticeships, workshops, and a summer camp designed to inspire and educate the next generation of Questa farmers—including farming beginners and high school students.

LOR’s support will fund instructional workshops, leased land where participants can gain hands-on experience, travel costs associated with these farm visits, and the promotion of Cultivo’s programs throughout the community.
