Gaming Equipment Launches an E-Sports Program at Montezuma-Cortez High School

  • Local Champion: Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1
  • Date Funded: September 25, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $4,635

Many students at Montezuma-Cortez High School don’t participate in traditional sports, leaving them with few opportunities to compete and build teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. However, a growing number of students have expressed interest in competitive gaming, which was recently sanctioned by the Colorado High School Athletics and Activities Association. One school staff member recognized the opportunity to engage more students in team activities, so he reached out to LOR with the idea to create a new e-sports program. LOR’s funding will help Montezuma-Cortez High School purchase gaming equipment for its new e-sports program, including Nintendo Switch consoles, controllers, and a number of games. Students in the program will compete virtually with schools across Colorado while developing skills that prepare them for the growing college scholarship opportunities in e-sports.
