Donkeys, Llamas, and Goats Foster Connection in Cortez

Cortez residents in long-term care facilities have few regular visitors or meaningful social connections, causing loneliness and isolation. After working with aging adults through the county’s senior center and facilitating the Aging in Montezuma County task force, one volunteer with 360 Arts Now came up with a solution. LOR’s funding helped 360 Arts Now contract Story Tree Animal Healers and a photographer, bringing teams of donkeys, llamas, and goats directly to Cortez long-term care facilities to foster one-on-one connection, conversation, and joy. The program builds on a broader local storytelling movement, returning warmth and belonging to those who need it most.
