Taos Plaza Events Strengthen Community Connections

  • Local Champion: Downtown Taos
  • Date Funded: July 20, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $9,947

Taos Plaza has long served as the historic heart of downtown; however, in recent years, older residents have become increasingly disconnected from the space as it has shifted toward a destination for visitors rather than a regular gathering place for locals. Recognizing this gap, staff at Taos MainStreet approached LOR with an idea: host a series of “Coffee on the Plaza” gatherings—a consistent, free event offering Taos elders and the broader Taos community a reason to reconnect downtown. LOR funding will help Taos MainStreet purchase four branded canopy tents, coffee-service equipment, and program supplies, as well as hire a facilitator to plan and lead ten free gatherings featuring refreshments, conversation, games, music, and community resources. The reusable equipment will serve as a long-term community asset, supporting future Plaza programming—including family events, cultural celebrations, and public meetings—well beyond the initial series. Together, these investments will strengthen social connection and reinforce Taos Plaza as a shared civic space for all.
