Veteran Storytelling Reduces Mental Health Stigma and Strengthens Buffalo Community Connections

  • Local Champion: Uptown Films
  • Date Funded: July 22, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $8,593

Buffalo is home to approximately 422 veterans—nearly twice the national average—yet many return from service without meaningful opportunities to process their experiences or connect with their community, contributing to isolation and limited dialogue around mental health and reintegration. After connecting with a documentary filmmaker who featured Wyoming veterans in a new film, the owner of the Buffalo Theater and founder of Uptown Films reached out to LOR with an idea. LOR’s funding will help Uptown Films host a series of events, beginning with a screening of “Crossing the Threshold,” including a Q&A with veteran participants and the filmmaker and an on-site mental health professional. The screening will be followed by four facilitated social gatherings with food and professional mental health support. By centering veteran voices and creating space for shared storytelling, the program will reduce mental health stigma, strengthen local support networks, and build connections between veterans, their families, and the broader Buffalo community.
