Free Training Classes Keep Dogs Out of Shelters and in Cortez Homes

  • Local Champion: For Pets' Sake
  • Date Funded: June 4, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $8,350

Despite its funding and staffing constraints, the Cortez Animal Shelter is usually full, so it’s a problem when families relinquish their pets. Volunteers with For Pets’ Sake Humane Society, a local foster care and adoption nonprofit, noticed one particular issue that was exacerbating the problem: Many families were adopting dogs, finding that they had aggressive or unwanted behaviors, and then returning or abandoning them. One volunteer with the group reached out to LOR with an idea: launch free training classes that would correct unwanted behaviors and keep dogs in homes. LOR’s funding will help For Pets’ Sake purchase training equipment and cover the costs of local trainers, making dog obedience classes accessible and affordable for local families.
