Digitized Artifact Collection Expands Access to Taos History

  • Local Champion: Kit Carson House, Inc
  • Date Funded: February 22, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $5,000

The Kit Carson Museum is a historic landmark, providing over 20,000 visitors with the opportunity to experience a piece of Taos’ local history each year. However, the hundreds of historical artifacts housed inside the building have never been cataloged, making it hard for the museum to maximize its potential as an educational asset.

A long-time museum volunteer approached LOR with a solution to this problem: hire an intern to catalog the building’s contents and purchase software that will allow them to create an online catalog of historical artifacts, which will be available to the public. LOR’s support will fund a stipend for the graduate student cataloging the artifacts and pay for a year of management software, enabling Kit Carson Museum staff to preserve an important piece of Taos’ history while creating greater public access to their collection.
