Bringing Performing Arts Back to Life in Cortez

  • Local Champion: Community Radio Project (KSJD)
  • Date Funded: September 14, 2022
  • Grant Amount: $6,658

Community theater programs can be great assets in small towns, but the Sunflower Theatre in Cortez is not equipped with the proper technology to support on-stage theater performances—and locals haven’t even tried putting on a play since before the COVID-19 pandemic. A staffer at KSJD radio station, which oversees the Sunflower Theatre, approached the LOR Foundation with a potential solution: purchase theater-specific lighting and sound equipment and create a director’s honorarium to support quality community theater in Cortez. With LOR’s help, the theater will soon be equipped with two new spotlights, iPads and other audio equipment, as well as the funds it will need to encourage community members to remember all the world’s a stage—especially theirs.
