A Video Game System Makes Mental Health Treatment Fun in Libby

  • Local Champion: Western Montana Mental Health Center
  • Date Funded: February 15, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $3,408

Anxiety can be debilitating, especially for those who struggle with social situations. Some therapists and mental health professionals have turned to video games to help their clients connect with others and heal. Western Montana Mental Health Center is one of the few organizations in Libby dedicated to treating mental health, and the clinic often sees young adults with social anxiety. Staff believed that a multi-player gaming system would give patients the chance to spend time together and talk, helping them build valuable social skills. A survey revealed a serious interest from many patients who said they would attend in-person support groups if they could play video games together. One staff member wanted to launch the program, but hadn’t been able to find a way. Through an introduction, she connected with LOR. LOR’s funding will help the mental health center buy a television, Nintendo Switch console, controllers, and furniture to create a dedicated game therapy room, giving patients the chance to bond over their shared interest and develop connections with each other.
