A Free Training Program and a Public Awareness Effort Aims to Improve Dog-Human Interactions

  • Local Champion: Lander Pet Connection
  • Date Funded: November 20, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $9,000

Lander is home to myriad recreation opportunities and also myriad four-legged friends who like to accompany their humans on their outdoor adventures. Unfortunately that can sometimes create negative interactions between people and pups both on the trails and around town. Recognizing the need for better canine education and training to prevent these mishaps, staff at the Lander Pet Connection came up with a plan to launch a program designed to educate the public about human and dog interactions. Called the Lander Dog-wise, the initiative will include free clinics, low cost online trainings, brochures, social media, and banners in public spaces. The first two trainings would cover how to stay safe around free-roaming dogs and dog safety at home; researchers  track data across all measures to assess the effectiveness of the pilot program. The Pet Connection just needed a little help to launch Dog-wise, and reached out to LOR. LOR’s funding will help cover the costs of meeting supplies for the clinics, marketing materials, and professional services to track data in the pilot project.
