A Dining Room Brings Joy to Cortez Assisted Living Residents

  • Local Champion: Senior Housing Options (Madison House)
  • Date Funded: March 18, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $2,416

Aging is a quiet but growing problem across the U.S. The issue is particularly pronounced in rural communities, which tend to be older than urban areas and can struggle to provide accessible and affordable services to elderly residents. Despite the challenges, Cortez’s Madison House stands out. It is one of the few assisted living facilities in Colorado that continues to accept residents on Medicare. With support from LOR, the nonprofit facility recently installed a kitchen so residents could remain more independent and cook and bake for themselves and their neighbors. But residents still lacked a space to gather for meals and coffee. Staff with Madison House shared their idea to create a dining area for residents. LOR’s funding will help the facility buy a large table and 10 chairs so residents can have a space to visit and build community.
