Wildfire Preparedness Workshops Build Community Resilience in Questa

  • Local Champion: Friends of Rio Grande del Norte National Monument
  • Date Funded: May 26, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $2,200

As wildfire risk rises across northern New Mexico, Questa residents lack consistent access to practical fire-mitigation education, defensible-space guidance, and emergency preparedness resources—placing lives, property, and community infrastructure at greater risk. When the team at Friends of the Rio Grande del Norte realized how many residents were unprepared to reduce wildfire hazards around their homes, they reached out to LOR with a solution: deliver practical, locally focused preparedness workshops. LOR’s funding will enable Friends of the Rio Grande del Norte and local fire officials to host a series of workshops on defensible space strategies, evacuation planning, and home-hardening techniques tailored to Questa’s conditions. These accessible sessions will provide residents with step-by-step guidance and resources to reduce wildfire risk, improve household preparedness, and strengthen neighborhood resilience ahead of future fire seasons.
