Spanish-Language CPR Training Equips Monte Vista Caregivers With Life-Saving Skills

  • Local Champion: Rio Grande County Public Health
  • Date Funded: August 1, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $7,230

At a LOR-hosted community listening luncheon for agricultural workers, one attendee mentioned that many Spanish-speaking caregivers in Monte Vista lacked CPR and First Aid training because courses in the area are conducted exclusively in English.

More than one in four Monte Vista residents speak Spanish, and for a significant number of older locals serving as informal in-home care providers, it’s their primary language.

So, an employee at the Rio Grande County Public Health Department proposed a solution: host a series of free CPR and First Aid certification classes in Spanish to help ensure life-saving skills are accessible to all Monte Vista residents, regardless of language.

LOR’s support will cover the cost of the materials and instructors needed to promote and produce the trainings and fund a community outreach dinner during which the Public Health Department can gather more information from local Spanish speakers about their health-related needs and priorities.
