Radio Repeater Strengthens Emergency Communications in Monte Vista

  • Local Champion: San Luis Valley Amateur Radio Association
  • Date Funded: February 18, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $7,497

Monte Vista residents face critical communication gaps during emergencies when cellular and internet services fail.

After operating a local amateur radio repeater with limited coverage, a seasoned licensed radio operator and member of the San Luis Valley Amateur Radio Association saw an opportunity to improve emergency communications by moving the equipment to a higher-elevation tower, so he contacted LOR with a plan.

LOR’s funding will help purchase and install a new radio repeater, duplexer, coax cable, and supplies at the San Luis Valley Rural Electric Cooperative tower in Monte Vista, providing reliable valley-wide coverage on a new frequency. The upgraded system will ensure that Monte Vista residents and emergency agencies can communicate during crises when traditional systems fail.
