Pump Track Brings Bike Skills Back to Taos Youth

  • Local Champion: A Taos Local
  • Date Funded: July 28, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $9,980

Taos youth have long lacked a dedicated space to safely develop bicycle-handling skills and confidence, limiting their ability to use bicycles as reliable transportation and reducing access to healthy outdoor recreation. When construction of a new housing subdivision removed the community’s former pump track, families were left without a place to build those essential skills. Recognizing this gap, a team member at the Taos Youth and Family Center and a local parent came up with a solution: repurpose soil generated during the ongoing ice arena renovation to construct a new pump track. LOR’s funding helped the Taos Youth and Family Center hire a bike park consultant and earthmoving contractor to build the track using existing onsite soil, install a split-rail entrance fence and concrete parking stops, and host the annual Bike Rodeo. The completed pump track will remain open year-round for youth and adults, with the Town of Taos providing ongoing oversight to ensure the facility serves the community for years to come.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Downtown Taos.
