Music Class Gives Lander Adults Chance to Learn Instruments They Missed as Kids

  • Local Champion: Central Wyoming College Foundation
  • Date Funded: January 21, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $2,640

In Lander, many adults want to learn how to play an instrument but face significant barriers—particularly the cost of purchasing or renting instruments and finding appropriate instruction. When an elementary music teacher launched “Bring a Grown Up to Music Class” Day where students and adults compose songs together, the experience proved so meaningful for adults who had missed the opportunity to learn instruments as children that he began envisioning a class designed just for them. After Central Wyoming College’s community outreach program brought him on to teach the course, he reached out to LOR with a plan to make it even more accessible. The 13-week beginner band class will teach adults to play their chosen instrument, read music, perform together, and ultimately present a recital—with all instruments provided free during the course. Students who discover a passion for their instrument can apply rental fees toward purchasing it to continue their musical journey. LOR’s funding will help cover three months of instrument rentals for up to 20 students plus beginner band charts, removing the primary financial barrier that prevents adults from exploring musical education.
