Monte Vista Police Host a Series of Community Events to Build Trust

  • Local Champion: City of Monte Vista
  • Date Funded: August 10, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $5,700

In March 2023, a teenage male was shot and killed by Monte Vista police officers responding to a call regarding a young main experiencing a mental health crisis. This brought grief, anger, confusion, and mistrust of law enforcement to the community. To help address the strained relationship, a records clerk for the police department brought forward the idea of the Monte Vista Police Department, which has also recently hired three new officers, hosting a series of community events where law enforcement can connect with locals—especially youth. LOR’s funding will support four events through the end of 2023: National Night Out in August, a Halloween Trunk or Treat, an ice cream social in the park in November, and Shop With a Cop in December.
