Local Resources Offer Hope to Taos Families Living with Type 1 Diabetes

  • Local Champion: A Taos local
  • Date Funded: March 29, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $4,900

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the body to produce little to no insulin. It is unclear what causes a person to develop type 1 diabetes, and there is currently no cure, which can make it a confusing and overwhelming diagnosis for families.

When a mother in Taos went in search of support following her son’s sudden diagnosis, she found that there were very few local resources or points of connection for children and families actively managing type 1 diabetes. So, she reached out for help establishing a robust local support network that will also promote screening and early detection of this increasingly prevalent condition within the Taos community.

LOR’s funding covered the costs of producing and promoting the group’s first family-focused event series (bowling, swimming, and a picnic). Each event will feature an on-site community support team and medical professionals to provide real-time resources and support for Taos families navigating life with type 1 diabetes.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Taos Whole Community Health.
