High School English Teacher Offers More Choices to Build Lifelong Readers

  • Local Champion: Lander Valley High School
  • Date Funded: October 29, 2021
  • Grant Amount: $5,000

Helping students become lifelong readers is a perennial goal for literacy experts. One Lander Valley High School English teacher could see the need in her own school for students to have a wider variety of reading materials, as well as greater autonomy in their reading choices plus time to engage with texts of their own choosing. With funding from LOR, the teacher and her department worked with librarians to curate and purchase a wide-ranging collection of high-interest young adult literature, which they used to build library “annexes” in each of the school’s Language Arts classrooms. In addition to offering a wider variety of books to students, they incorporated a number of simple changes into the school day, including providing designated time for uninterrupted reading and creating meaningful ways to mark and celebrate students’ literacy achievements.

This project was fiscally sponsored by Fremont County School District 1
