Girl Scouts Create Birthday Celebration Kits for Lander Food Pantries

  • Local Champion: A Lander local
  • Date Funded: March 31, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $500

In Lander, residents who rely on food banks and little free pantries for groceries have no access to items needed to create celebrations like birthday cakes. When a local Girl Scout troop spent three months brainstorming community service projects for their Bronze Award—which requires significant community benefit and time commitment—they explored several ideas before landing on one that resonated: Everyone deserves a celebration. After initially considering a food drive, the girls realized food pantries around town don’t stock birthday supplies and had an idea to change that. They researched and priced out everything needed for a birthday celebration—cake mix, soda to replace oil and eggs, cake pans, candles, sprinkles, icing, and small fidget toys as gifts—calculating they could create kits for about $418. The troop will assemble at least 60 birthday kits and distribute them to three food pantries in town, with hopes to continue the project as they pursue their Silver Award next year. LOR’s funding helped purchase supplies for 65 birthday kits.

This project is fiscally sponsored by Lander Community Foundation.
