Friends of Rio Grande del Norte Connect Taos Youth With the Land

  • Local Champion: Friends of Rio Grande del Norte National Monument
  • Date Funded: May 2, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $21,605

Rio Grande del Norte (RGDN) was designated as a national monument in 2013, but over over the past decade, many youth in Taos have not been able to access the amenity on the outskirts of town due to financial barriers and a lack of outdoors training. It’s a growing problem, as many in Taos are concerned that youth are becoming disconnected form the natural world and the land. To address this problem, locals with the Friends of Rio Grande del Norte National Monument are trying to grow opportunities for kids to get outdoors and are planning free trips for Taos and Taos Pueblo youth. Funding from the LOR Foundation will be used to start guided activities within the monument for nearly 135 kids who will gain experience fly fishing, hiking, white water rafting, and more.

This project was fiscally sponsored by New Mexico Wilderness Alliance
