Expanded Access to Youth Bowling Supports Inclusive Play in Taos

  • Local Champion: Taos Municipal Schools
  • Date Funded: December 6, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $3,385

Bowling is an inclusive sport that allows participants of all skill levels to socialize while participating in physical activity and building coordination. However, bowling is not recognized by the NMAA as an athletic sport and, therefore, does not qualify for funding. Without district funding, the Taos Middle/High School bowling club was struggling to provide adequate transportation and equipment for all interested students, so a Taos High School teacher (who also serves as a volunteer bowling coach) reached out to LOR with a solution: expand transportation and bowling alley access so that more youth can participate in the club.

Funding from the LOR Foundation will cover alley rental fees so that the club can practice twice a week, pay for transportation of participants to seven events, and allow the team to purchase balls for younger bowlers or those with special needs, ensuring everyone can bowl safely.
