Emergency Training Prepares Cortez Middle School Students to Save Lives

  • Local Champion: Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1
  • Date Funded: October 31, 2024
  • Grant Amount: $2,470

Many Cortez students live with elderly family members or care for younger siblings, but they lack the basic emergency response skills that could help them handle a crisis at home. One Montezuma-Cortez Middle School health teacher had an idea that would equip her students with lifesaving knowledge, so she reached out to LOR for support. LOR’s funding will help the school launch a two-week certificate program that teaches CPR and first aid basics, covering supplies and instructor costs. Over three semesters, 90-120 students will learn how to respond in emergencies while also earning a certificate that will open the door to future employment opportunities like lifeguarding and child care.
