Dedicated Puppy Ward Improves Survival and Care at Taos Shelter

  • Local Champion: Humane Society of Taos Inc AKA Stray Hearts Animal Shelter
  • Date Funded: May 7, 2026
  • Grant Amount: $9,800

Stray Hearts Animal Shelter—the only shelter serving Taos County’s 2,200 square miles—has experienced an unprecedented surge in newborn and young puppy intake. Between December and April 2026, the shelter received approximately 150 puppies, compared to just 35 during the same period in 2024. This dramatic increase has strained the shelter’s existing capacity, with puppies being housed in spaces designed for adult dogs, increasing the risk of disease exposure, injury, and escape. After the Taos County Sheriff referred LOR to Stray Hearts to better understand the shelter’s most pressing needs, shelter leadership identified the urgent need to create a dedicated puppy care space. Their proposed solution is to convert an existing shelter pod into the facility’s first puppy ward, designed specifically to provide safe housing, improved sanitation, and appropriate care for newborn and young animals. With support from LOR, Stray Hearts will renovate Pod 5 by installing sealed epoxy flooring, puppy-specific kennels, whelping areas, and enrichment spaces. The project also includes expanded medical care, including vaccinations, diagnostic testing, and protective equipment, to reduce disease transmission among this vulnerable population. This dedicated puppy ward will provide a safer environment during a critical stage of development while allowing adult dog housing to return to its intended use. By increasing care capacity and improving sanitation, the project will reduce disease risk, improve animal welfare, and increase successful adoption and transfer outcomes for puppies throughout Taos County.
